Claire Ahern

Claire Ahern

Flute / Band - Claire Ahern began playing flute at age 11, began seriously pursuing music studies at age 17, and is currently in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Music Performance. Claire is honoured to be the recipient of various music scholarships and awards, including receiving funding from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust. In the summer of 2015, Claire won first place in regional and provincial music festivals and represented Nova Scotia in the woodwind category of the National Music Festival. She is grateful to have received funding from the Fountain School of Performing Arts to attend Domaine Forget and Orford Music during the summer of 2016. She currently plays Principal Flute for the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, and Co-Principal Flute for the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra. Last year, Claire successfully competed in Dalhousie's Concerto Night competition and performed the 1st movement of the Ibert Concerto as soloist with orchestra. She competed in October of this year and was again selected as a winning soloist, and will be performing the 1st movement of the Neilsen Concerto in February. 

 
Geordie Brown, The Advent Show 2015

Geordie Brown

Director / Piano / Cast - From Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Mr. Brown is an award-winning singer, film/stage actor, and pianist. Geordie has just returned to Charlottetown, PEI to reprise his role for his 3rd season in Anne & Gilbert: The Musical at The Guild theatre. A finalist in David Foster's Star Search Atlantic singing competition, Geordie has portrayed numerous musical roles on stage with his "powerful voice" (Opera Canada), including: lead roles in the Dalhousie Opera (The Face on the Barroom Floor, 'Aeneas' in Dido & Aeneas), Canadian Premiere productions on Neptune Theatre's Fountain Hall stage (ELF: The Musical, Disney's High School Musical), Forever Plaid at The Chester Playhouse, and his critically-acclaimed performance as 'Roger Davis' in RENT at the SPATZ Theatre in 2011. Geordie has appeared in numerous TV/Film productions, including The Tenth Circle with Kelly Preston, and Stephen King's Bag of Bones with Anika Noni Rose and Pierce Brosnan. As a stage director, Geordie recently directed an all-new produciton of the acclaimed Canadian musical revue "Stan Rogers: A Matter of Heart" at The Guild in Charlottetown. He also directed the Atlantic Canadian premiere of Pasek & Paul's "EDGES" at the 2009 Atlantic Fringe (Fringe Hit Winner), and has collaborated with Judy Savoy for the past 5 years on The Advent Show. He has also explored theatrical production in special events and corporate fundraisers, most recently as Production Director for the 2015 Bid For Life event for the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia. Geordie is currently a Cathedral Musician at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica. He's looking forward to once again singing this year as cantor/leader-of-song at the cathedral's 8:00pm Christmas Eve Mass. www.geordiebrown.com

(Music of the night); Side Show (Berklee College of music) Training: Jamieson Music Studio, Antigonish Creative Dance Association, Berklee College of Music Musical Theatre intensive, Berklee College of music Vocal Summit, Berklee College of Music Five Week Program. 

 
Fiona Clancey

Fiona Clancey

Singer / Chorus  - Fiona Clancey is 16 years old and from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In 2013, she competed and placed first in Canada Day Idol in Dartmouth. She has been a member of the St. Peter's Players since she was 6, performing in 7 different musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell. She was also a member of Dartmouth Players, starring in musicals such as Hairspray and Wicked. She is also a member of the award-winning Dartmouth All-City Girls Choir. She is involved in the theatre group Project ARC, which tours elementary schools teaching the importance of human rights through song and dance. She has been playing piano for 6 years and has also picked up the guitar and ukulele. She has also taken vocal training in Musical Theatre at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. Fiona is thrilled to be returning for her second year of the Advent Show. 

 
Jennifer Cleveland, The Advent Show 2015

Jennifer Cleveland

Singer / Cast -A lyric mezzo-soprano from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Jennifer graduated in 2010 from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education where she concentrated in classical voice, before following it up with a Bachelor of Education degree in 2012. 

Jennifer entertains regularly for various philanthropic and charitable organizations, and held several major roles in stage productions, such as Anything Goes, Twelfth Night, and Alice in Wonderland. She also competes internationally with the Area 1 Harmony Barbershop Champions, The ScotianAires.

Jennifer is currently a full-time music specialist with the Halifax Regional School Board, and pursuing a master’s degree in music education. She is thrilled to be back with the cast of “The Advent Show” to reprise her role again this season.

 
Charlie Fournier

Charlie Fournier

Narrator / Singer  - Charlie is an 11-year-old grade six student in Halifax. Charlie is a passionate sailor and spends his summers racing the coasts of Nova Scotia. He studies violin with Christy Hodder and is a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Ambassadors. This is Charlie’s third year in The Advent Show and he could not be more excited to be back

 
Noah Garnier

Noah Garnier

Drums / Percussion / Band - Noah Garnier is delighted to be making his debut with the Advent Show. He is a student at Halifax West High School, and plays in their concert and jazz bands. He has performed as a musician in Man of La Mancha and Mary Poppins, the last two musicals put on by Halifax West. He is also the percussion section leader in the Halifax Schools Symphony Orchestra, and has played such and performed such pieces as Beethoven's Symphony #1 and Edward Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. He intends to pursue a career as a composer.

 
Lucas Hernandes

Lucas Hernandes

Singer / Cast - Lucas Hernandes Nascimento grew up in the south of Brazil surrounded by popular and traditional Southern American culture. He began his education at the Federal University of Paraná, taking a variety of courses within several artistic fields. Beginning with an applied study pursuit in guitar, Lucas began to take an interest in various performance idioms. After a few performance opportunities, it was a clear decision that learning to sing was the next step towards something greater. In September of 2015 Lucas began to take that step under the tutelage of Professor Marcia Swanston, where the Fountain School of Performing Arts became a second home of intense study and formative relationships. Lucas is thankful to his friends, peers, instructors and the FSPA staff members for fostering his inner voice, and preparing him to serve as a vessel for music.

Singer / Chorus - Molly Kirk is from Waverley Nova Scotia.  Molly is an old soul who began her journey in music at the tender age of three, finding herself with a makeshift microphone in hand with an audience of supportive family members. Molly is twelve years old and will be completing another successful year at Bedford Academy in seventh grade. She performs at her school as a solo performer, and member of her School Choir, Glee Club and Rock Band. This is Molly’s third year studying saxophone through Bedford Academy’s Fine Arts program. Molly has received several Young Performance Awards, and she has recently learned to play piano and  guitar. Music has been synonymous with family throughout Molly’s life; both her mother and grandmother were recording artists. In 2014, Molly competed locally and placed 2nd in Canada Day Idol. She performed two songs incorporating her ability to play saxophone.

Hannah Nickel

Hannah Nickel

Cello / Band - Music: Hannah Nickel is currently studying cello with Hilary Brown, previously with Olive Shaw. She is a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra and Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts Chamber Orchestra. She has also taken piano lessons with Carolyn Bird and is playing tuba with the Lockview High School Concert Band. Etc: I am excited to return to The Advent Show this year. Thank you to my parents and teachers!  

 
Frantiska Nutarova

Frantiska Nutarova

Dancer / Chorus - Frantiska Nutarova is from Halifax, NS. She is 13 years old and attends grade eight at Ridgecliff Middle School. She began dance at age seven and is now training in many styles including ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary and highland dance. Frantiska trains at Elle Dance Academy and at Celtic Rhythm Dance Studio. She competes with her dancing and has received many titles, trophies and medals for her success. She is an active member of Amethyst Scottish Dancers of Nova Scotia, a performance group that recently took a trip to Toronto, to perform at the CNE. Frantiska has performed in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo for last 4 years as a highland dancer. Frantiska was also recently nominated for a scholarship for Highland Dance Theory Knowledge, this year the conference was held in Toronto. She is very passionate about her dance and is thrilled to perform in the 2016 Advent Show.

Phineas Stewart

Phineas Stewart

Violin / Band - Phineas Stewart has been playing the violin since he was six years old, when he first started lessons with Kirsty Money. Currently in grade 10 at Citadel High School, he is a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, and on the weekends can be found busking at the Halifax Seaport Market or singing with Capella Regalis. Phineas devotes his remaining leisure hours watching hockey (go Senators!) and reading Tolkien, and has recently taken up fencing.

 

Julia Velasco

Julia Velasco

Singer / Chorus - Julia Velasco is thirteen years old and lives in Bedford, Nova Scotia. As a little girl Julia loved to watch Sound of Music and would sing along to the songs. But she never knew she had a singing voice until she started voice lessons late last year. This year she started performing in public and enjoys volunteering to sing to the residents of Parkland at the Gardens in Halifax. She performed as an opening act in David Pomeranz concert at Bella Rose Arts Centre in April, and recently sang at a Filipino community celebration of Independence Day at St. Agnes Church in June. Julia is passionate and dedicated to music, practicing on her own everyday. Julia is currently training Classical/Broadway songs, and recently started piano lessons. She has done acting workshops, and she is also taking beginner Ballet, Tap and Jazz dance lessons at Maritime Dance Academy. Julia recently performed a solo concert for friends and family with musical selections from Sacred, Folk, Broadway and Classical!  Julia is very excited to be part of this year’s production of The Advent Show.

Nova Scotia Suzuki String Ensemble

Guest Performers - Directed by Christy Hodder, the talented, newly formed Junior Performance Group features members of the Nova Scotia Suzuki String Ensemble. Hodder's growing group of 110 players are currently based out of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. The Suzuki method works on the principle that every child can develop his/her abilities during the early absorbing and sensitive years far beyond what most people can imagine, through the same process by which he/she learns their mother tongue. The primary goal is to nurture a child not only in musical abilities but also in his/her total human development. The Nova Scotia Suzuki String Junior Performance Group will be performing prior to the first act at each show. Learn more about our Guest Performers Outreach Program on our Community Outreach page.

 
Team Possibles

Team Possibles 

Guest Performers - Team Possibles is an arts exploration group made up of young adults with Down syndrome and their peers (ages 14-25). Artist Renee Forrestall created Team Possibles in Fall 2007, for the Nova Scotia Down Syndrome Society. It is an artists-run program that addresses the social, cultural, and expressive needs of the young adults through engagement, and exploration in different art forms, including: visual arts, film, and dance. Staffed by professional artists, Dalhousie, MSVU, and NSCAD students, and a group of core, dedicated volunteers, Team Possibles continues to develop and grow. The Team Possibles Dancers will perform at the end of intermission, with original music by David Ewer, and choreography by Diana Higgs.
